This fire in Big Sur is a huge force devouring the mountains and everything in it's path. It is in times like these that we gather as a community and support one another in any way that we can. Here at Happy Girl, there are two people very dear to our hearts that have lost their homes in this fire. We have put together an amazing night to honor them, support them, and hug them. The chef will be Chef Wood of Carmel Valley Ranch and the night will be a delightful gathering of community and love! 100% of the money gathered will go to these two individuals and we are also working on other events and fundraisers for the larger community effected by the fire ( and you can also donate directly at http://www.cpoabigsur.org/). We have selected these two because they have personally been a part of our community here at Happy Girl Kitchen. 100% of ticket sales will be divided equally between the two and there will also be a box for each of them to receive personal donations beyond the ticket price. Also, if you know them personally then try and think of something that you can promise to them in the future to show your love and support. I think of those "tokens" that I receive from my kids beautifully written on a piece of paper for Mother's Day. A thought, a promise, a pledge to fulfill a need or request in the future can mean a lot to someone who has lost everything. A massage, a piece of artwork or furniture, a copper pot, a dinner...the sky is the limit!
MATT MILLEA - Our dear Matt Millea has lost his house in the fire. He did not take anything out of his house when evacuating because he had his car loaded with all of the items he needed to cater an Outstanding "in the Fields dinner" the following night. He is so loyal to his commitments that he prioritized his obligation to the dinner over his art, momentos, and life possessions. Matt has given so much to individuals and to our community. Happy Girl Kitchen would not be who she is today if our dear friend Erik had not introduced us to Matt years ago. He has been the chef at most of our Pop Up Dinners here and has boosted the dinner scene at Happy Girl. Toby Rowland Jones said it very clearly in his post....
"Matt is truly one of the most generous souls - he will and has donated his time and gifted expertise to help whenever and wherever needed. He has donated huge amounts of time for the Big Sur Food and Wine festival, Chanterelle Fest, Forager festival and so many others. He's trained under luminaries such as Cal Stamenov and produces outstanding dishes."
Matt has donated his time to many events in the community involving kids and farmers and all kinds of community building events. He has always been there to help friends in need and to lend a hand when people are moving or need someone to watch their homes or pets! This fire is giving us all a chance to be able to give back to Matt and support him when he needs it most! He is usually a very private person and does not like attention, but is thankful to feel the love at this time. In true Matt fashion, he also insisted that this event was a shared fundraiser for our mutual friend Charlie Cascio who also lost his homestead.
CHARLIE CASCIO - I remember the first time I heard about Charlie Cascio as the legendary figure who lived in the base of a beautiful redwood tree in the Palo Colorado Canyon. Charlie is one of the kindest and determined spirits that I know and the only person that I know who knows how to speak goat. He lost his beautiful homestead in the recent fire as well. My heart breaks again because he had entirely handcrafted his homestead and made a beautiful space that sustained his livelihood. Charlie made amazing goat cheese that is sold to many of the best restaurants on the coast. He is a regular teacher at Esalen and is the author of the Esalen Cookbook. We have appreciated using Charlie's cheese for dinners at Happy Girl and one of the most memorable was when he was featured in our fermentation dinner with Sandor Katz.
Dinner starts at 7pm at our cafe and shop in Pacific Grove:
