Overview day! We will plan our menu for the week and learn about the big picture of food. We will start the morning out by making gallettes and getting comfortable in teh kitchen. We will walk to Nob Hill and learn how to shop well! Your children will learn how to read labels and explore the geography of the store and understanding the role of a modern grocery store in our food systems (think Michael Pollan). Seasonality, processed food, sustainability and health. I will have every child pick out their favorite food and we will read the label and see if we can create a more healthy version. We will then break for lunch at Happy Girl. In the afternoon we will walk to the Monday Farmers Market in Pacific Grove and counter what we learned in the grocery store with what we are experiencing in the market. We will also go to the library to pick out some botanical art books and cook books to inspire our week! We will return and learn the art of pickling that afternoon.
Today we will be visiting a local organic farm in Watsonville called Lonely Mountain Farm! On the small diversified farm we will learn where our food comes from and kids will get a chance to plant and harvest and get their hands in the dirt. We will also be starting sprouts for the week and harvesting strawberries to make strawberry jam. Drop off will be at 8:30 so we can promptly leave at 9 am for the farm!
The special outting of the day will be to adventure in the tide pools and we will have a local storyteller come and tell stories to the kids (last summer this was a huge highlight for all of the kids). We will make a mexican lunch from scratch including the corn tortillas (the kids love it!!!) The kids will make their batch of strawberry jam.
We will return for another day on the farm! This day will focus on the care of animals and we will harvest vegetables and flowers for our big feast on Friday. Drop off will be at 8:30 so we can promptly leave at 9 am for the farm!
The grand finally day. On Friday we will focus on planning a big feast for our families to enjoy together on Friday night! It is going to be a great party! We will make many foods this day including baking our sourdough bread and make our own cheese! They will also make some sauerkraut to take home as their little pet for the summer.
