Monday:
Overview day! We will plan our menu for the week and learn about the big picture of food. We will start the morning out by making gallettes and getting comfortable in the kitchen. We will walk to Nob Hill and learn how to shop well! Your children will learn how to read labels and explore the geography of the store and understanding the role of a modern grocery store in our food systems (think Michael Pollan). Seasonality, processed food, sustainability and health. I will have every child pick out their favorite food and we will read the label and see if we can create a more healthy version. We will then break for lunch at Happy Girl. In the afternoon we will walk to the Monday Farmers Market in Pacific Grove and counter what we learned in the grocery store with what we are experiencing in the market! We will return and learn the art of pickling that afternoon.
Tuesday:
Today we will be visiting a local organic farm in Carmel Valley called Bhakti Farms! This is the owners home farm and there the kids will be able to be a part of milking the cows, making ice cream by hand and planting seeds to take home. We will also talk about the importance of compost for our soils and compassion to the planet! Very excited for this day! Drop off will be at 8:30am so we can promptly leave at 9 am for the farm! We will be returning later in the afternoon - 4pm.
Wednesday:
The special outting of the day will be going to a local organic farm - Earthbound farm - where we will harvest flowers and herbs for the dinner. We will make a Mexican lunch from scratch including the corn tortillas (the kids love it!!!) The kids will make their batch of strawberry jam.
Thursday:
This day we will focus on planning a big feast for our families to enjoy together that night! It is going to be a great party! We will make many foods this day to prep for the night after including baking our sourdough bread and make our own cheese! We will make the entire dinner from scratch and campers will learn to set a beautiful table, cook a meal and how to host and serve. It is really going to be a night to remember.
Friday:
The grand finally day. On Friday we will celebrate with a day at Lover's Point Beach. The campers have worked so hard all week and it is just fun to get together and relax! We will start with a celebratory pancake breakfast and then pack a sack lunch for the beach. It is really a grand finally!!! Drop off is recommended at 10am if possible on this day as we usually had a late night with the dinner the night before!.
